Sub #166: Gothic Box special

week of September 18, 2006

This episode revolved around Rhino Records' Gothic Box, A Life Less Lived, which will be released on Tuesday. Jim Shearer interviewed Peter Murphy of Bauhaus and Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance. Here's the playlist for episode #166:

The Cure - Lullaby
Interpol - PDA
Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - The Mercy Seat
My Chemical Romance - Helena
Sisters of Mercy - Black Planet
She Wants Revenge - These Things
AFI - Miss Murder

You can watch this episode and more bonus videos at MTV Overdrive. Finally, that's a direct link to the episode!

I don't know what to think of this episode. Peter Murphy offered some great thoughts on the genre, but MTV2 was a bit misguided to invite Gerard Way on the show and play videos by MCR, She Wants Revenge, and AFI, among others. The box set A Life Less Lived really isn't about new rock bands that look sort of gothic in appearance — it pays tribute to the history of goth-influenced music. The box set itself looks really solid. MTV2, on the other hand, might have tried too hard to relate to 'the kids these days' with this episode. Any thoughts? Post your comments on this entry.

wow. in the last section, i loved how peter basically lectured that guy from mcr about where the gothic movement was really coming from. he even asked the guy from mcr "do you get/understand it?". you can see peter's frustration when the guy from mcr just keeps saying "yes i get it" and then, i could swear he MISquotes bela lugosi is dead.

Why would you put the guy from MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE next to Peter Murphy on the Goth Box Special?

Gothic Rock is a sub-genere that is often not in the mainstream rock consciousness.

(Maybe one or two songs from
The Cure made it onto Top 40 Radio.)

Why would you put a band who gets played every hour on every clear channel "alternative" station next to PETER MURPHY...

Why not put someone on the show who really is trying to carry the Gothic Rock Torch.

Some examples.

Voltaire
Unto Ashes
Andriod Lust

I am sure there are other much better choices!

of course he doesn't "get it" He only knows to spout those influences off the list he was told to memorize by his record label. If he actually had to elaborate more than that, his head would explode.

Couldn't MTV find a recent artist more suited to sit with Murphy that wasn't so TRL friendly??

My wife and I were livid when we saw that Hot Topic-clothed poser on Subterranean. MTV2 obviously doesn't know its Sunday night audience.

I can understand that Subterranean can go out of hand and consider bands like AFI and My Chemical Romance "goth-influenced". But however, I remembered that on the internet, I saw that the video for MCR's "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" (the version with the live footage) debuted on Subterranean before they broke into mainstream.
