Sub #177: Robert Smith

Week of December 11, 2006

SubterraneanIn this episode of Subterranean on MTV2, Jim Shearer interviewed Robert Smith of The Cure. They have a new live DVD, "The Cure Festival 2005," featuring 30 songs from their European concerts last year.

Here's the playlist for episode #177:

The Cure - Mint Car
Secret Machines - Lightning Blue Eyes
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Gold Lion
The Cure - Inbetween Days
Sigur Ros - Hoppipolla
Wolfmother - Dimension
The Cure - Never Enough
Mogwai - Friend Of The Night
The Cure - Hot, Hot, Hot

Good selection of videos, nice and varied. I love The Cure and really look up to Robert Smith, so the interview was good stuff. That's about all I have to say about this episode, 'cause I was going back and forth between this and the KROQ webcast (see below).

I appreciate the playlists, but they aren't excatly complete. You list 'Cure - Never Enough' which would lead anyone to think it was the vintage video, instead it was a brand new clip from the Festival DVD. You did the same thing last time with Muse - Starlight that was really from the 2006 European Music Awards. Please make a note when something is new or a different version.
On another note it seemed like Robert was on maybe 5 minutes total. What the heck is the point of forcing us to watch the rest online, just show it on the damn TV!

The Cure to me means discovering California in the late 1980's. They have a radio station out of San Diego that played all the newest stuff. The sun and surf, I feel in love with a place. The Cure reminds me of skateboarding, Oceanside, Ca, and Mission Beach, Ca,. I do not consider them a Goth band, nothing against Goth. Marilyn Manson’s first 3 albums are out of sight. I always thought of Marilyn Manson’s 1st 3 CDs motivational like. I feel the same way about my bros: A.R.E. Weapons.

If someone could post the nominees for the best video of 2006 that would be nice, I accidently clicked out and went back and they had just taken down that page, pissed me off.

I have to agree with some of the previous comments - i dont consider The Cure a goth band either. If you look back at their catalogue of work it varies so much over the years.
