Sub #178: Best of 2006
Week of December 18, 2006
In this episode of Subterranean on MTV2, Jim Shearer took us through the top ten videos of 2006, as voted by people on MTV2.com over the last month or so.Here's the playlist for episode #178:
10. Morrissey - You Have Killed Me
9. Minus The Bear - Pachuca Sunrise
8. The Willowz - Cons and Tricks
7. Goldfrapp - Ooh La La
6. Imogen Heap - Hide & Seek
5. The Dresden Dolls - Sing
4. Regina Spektor - Fidelity
3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Cheated Hearts
2. Atmosphere - Say Hey There
1. Mew - Special
What does everyone think of this list? I'm glad Regina made it on there. Atmosphere must have a pretty dedicated group of people voting for him, considering he was #1 a couple of years ago as well. Congrats to MTV2 for actually playing the video! Mew at #1 this time struck me as a random choice, but in any case, good stuff.

Looks like Subterranean will be taking the next few weeks off. Stay with altmusictv through the rest of the holidays and new year for more news and whatever else I feel like posting. Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and enjoy the holidays, everyone.

Minus The Bear rated, so I was satisfied. It's Déjà vu, to watch videos from earlier in the year. The prior episode seemed like a review itself, since many of the videos that Robert Smith selected played in 2005.
Atmosphere, in the top tenagain...? How? Is this TRL? And Goldfrapp...au révoir to that.
Overall, I question how music will change again in next year. Five years from now, which artists would I remember.
Though I may like the online version of the show better, I like the broadcast almost as much, and I would hate it if the show did not play for another five years. Here's to another year.
I voted for Goldfrapp, and I was surprised to see that it made the cut at Lucky #7 when I looked at the list. I thought that she wouldn't make the cut. I'll be looking forward to seeing it online, since I don't have MTV2.
While I enjoy Mew - Special, I am also quite surprised that it was number one. I actually expected Fidelity or Cheated Hearts to do better. Nevertheless, it is a pleasing list.
I cannot wait to see Subterranean next year.
I was surprised that mew was #1. Very disappointed that the strokes, horrors, spinto band, or franz ferdinand and dirty pretty things were not even in the countdown.
MEW!? WTF? but Rather them then atmosphere.
I didn't remember half of these videos. Obviously most viewers have better memories than I do.
Shame Morrissey wasn't higher, and Jenny Lewis didn't even make the cut.
i agree it would've been great to see Jenny Lewis or Franz on the list... I voted for them
When is Subterranean coming back? in the meantime, they should put like old episodes.
Sean Lennon should have made it for "Dead Meat".
I agree with Jim Shearer that Muse - Knights of Cydonia is one of the best videos of the year. He said that a few episodes ago. I can't believe that it didn't make the top ten!! I voted for it.
I think this list reflects which bands had links off their band web pages to Subterranean so their fans could log in and vote. Since Muse did not do that, none of their fans knew to vote for this. Too bad. Knights of Cydonia is the most original, best looking video, and it is also for a great song.
Check out the new post for the new Subterranean guest schedule.
muse video original? yeah, really original. that video was one step away from a lee van cleef cameo. The most original I had seen was....neither. The most candid was "F*ck Forever" by babyshambles, I loved seeing him high on film.
