Better late than never at PLUG

week of February 18, 2007

2007 PLUG Independent Music AwardsLast weekend, I offered a recap of the Grammy Awards, supposedly TV's biggest night of music. Yet another award ceremony took place that weekend — but not on TV, mind you — the PLUG Independent Music Awards.

PLUG is very different from other award ceremonies. Referring to those events, PLUG says, "Very rarely do these honors reach, let alone embrace, independent music... We're a community that thinks for ourselves. We don't take our cues from mainstream media or marketing."

For a list of winners and other event info, check the PLUG awards official site. Looks like it was a great night for anyone in NYC.

Quick notes about some of the winners... I was pulling for Cat Power to win for female artist (her album was my #2 favorite for 2006), but winner Neko Case was still a fantastic choice (and my #4 album).

It was great to see Cincinnati's WOXY take the award for Internet radio station. I was also hoping for a local win in the specialty radio show category, but that didn't happen. Miss Sally's Playhouse, from the now-defunct WAQZ, was defeated by Sirius' Left Of Center.

Despite the MTV Networks layoffs (a new summary of which is in our previous post), coming up on Sunday, February 25, Subterranean on MTV2 will be airing a show they did from the PLUG awards. Of course, we'll have the recap and video of the show when the time comes.
