Sub #185: PLUG Awards

Week of February 26, 2007

This week's Subterranean on MTV2 was supposed to be hosted by Jim Shearer from the PLUG awards. Instead, we got just a block of videos.

I guess the changes at MTV2 went into effect even sooner than the Subterranean staff anticipated. See the previous post and my further comments inside it for more information.

UPDATE: Maura at Idolator forwarded a press release to me that says the PLUG awards episode will air properly on Tuesday night (a.k.a. Wednesday morning) at 4 AM ET on MTV2.

Here is the playlist for the episode, provided by Tom.

01-I'll Believe In Anything - Wolf Parade
02-Nothing Like This - J Dilla
03-Cheer It On - Tokyo Police Club
04-Leave Before The Lights Come On - Arctic Monkeys
05-Great Salt Lake - Band Of Horses
06-Lazy Eye (recorded live) - Silversun Pickups
07-Rick Rubin - Spank Rock
08-Dark Wave - Stephen Malkmus & Jicks
09-Alala - CSS
10-Father To A Sister Of Thought - Pavement

The PLUG awards episode is also online now:

Gah, I forgot to mention this. On the brighter side, that Silversun Pickups performance was great.

OK, so I'm confused. Did Subterranean air, or was it just a block of regular videos?

Are you deferring all future Subterranean content to their new blog?

'Cause this is where I've been coming for years to view the playlist every week, to see what new videos came out that I need to take note of.

"The lost episode"--Subterranean at the 2007 PLUG Awards. Post it online.

As for the live-performance video by the Silversun Pickups, "Lazy Eye" is okay, though It doesn't rock like "Well Though Out Twinkles". MTV is late to the game and already missed the better single.

Like 120 Minutes when it expired transformed, so Subterranean has experienced the same degradation. Nothing's ever too certain.

Thanks for nearly four years.

Thanks Tom..

Wow.. I wish I saw Black Wave.
And even if they got rid of Jim Shearer.. it's still much better than anything on that's left. I agree with everyone, he was the "last VJ", and I will miss him so very much. Of course the band interviews as well.

Time again, to redo the Wikipedia entry on Subterranean.

(Altmusictv.com/sub is included as the "unofficial website" of Subterranean.)

Did anyone record the "Final" Jim Shearer episode from TV last night?

I had no idea about the airing until now.

If so, I have a lot of back episodes to trade.. Thanks,

DOES THIS MEAN THERE WON"T BE A SUBTERRANEAN THIS WEEK?!!!!!!!!!!

Did anybody catch the second version of Subterranean that was played later in the week? My TIVO recorded 47 minutes of basically the same episode, except the videos were in a different order AND there was a guest - Stephen Malkmus - who talked about his new record. Unfortunately I didn't get the whole episode for unknown reasons.

Chris Harris is right. MTV2 is showing no commitment to the show, so I don't think I should have to either. Jim Shearer was a perfect fit for Subterranean. Without him, any other host, or any bands ever on the show, there's no point in it being a show. Just watch some videos online.
