120 Minutes returns... sort of

posted 4/27/2007

In a relatively interesting development, altmusictv has learned VH1 Classic has brought back 120 Minutes... sort of. They've renamed The Alternative, their block of '80s and '90s alternative videos to 120 Minutes.

The video block is otherwise the same, with no host, no old 120 logos (they've created a new logo), and no old clips from the original show.

I checked it out last night, and although it was pretty much the same old stuff, it was kind of cool to see something called 120 Minutes airing on television. Thanks to a few alert visitors who told me about this news via e-mail. Here are the e-mails I received.

The first email was from Christine:

"I just noticed this when I was checking VH1C's schedule to tonight... As you can see it looks like The Alternative is now being called VH1 Classic's 120 Minutes. Now I'm not sure if this means great program changes, but I thought you'd like to know. I will of course have the playlist available tomorrow morning on my site."

The second email was from PVSP:

"I set my DVR to record The Alternative on all airings. This morning's 3 AM three-hour episode was a repeat of Sunday's show with one interesting change. When the show comes back from commercial instead of showing a graphic with VH1 Classic The Alternative it showed as VH1 Classic 120 Minutes. I thought this was very interesting. Unfortunately, from what I could tell, that was the extent of it."

Speaking of 120, I'll be adding a few more playlists to the archive in the next few weeks. You can see them now in the playlist archive comments section. Thanks to all contributors! If you've got any more old playlists, send them in.

I've heard about that on Wikipedia, and I wanted to make sure that it's confirmed, which led me to this article; and this left me so excited that I wanted to watch this when I have enough money to get that channel. Thanks for telling me about this.

Watching the falsely entitled 120 Minutes on VH1 Classic is nothing other than an admission of age.

I liked 120 Minutes too, but I'm only 24. I'm neither 'classic' nor out-of-date.

"Classic"...

...SNL on E!, repetitive Simpsons reruns, 120 Minutes on VH1...

Sounds like the '90s are as classic as all decades prior. I can't wait for the day when I watch a late-night infomerical for classic collections of '90s music, hosted by some burn-out bandmember.

I don't know whether this is the right right place to post this, but here goes.

I'm looking for a early 90's grunge video though I don't know the name of the band or the song. The videos was very eerier and featured a naked light bulb swinging from side to side and, if I remember correctly, the lyrics said something like "I took the knife to carve a hole in you". The whole thing was very dark. However, the name of the song and band has been bugging me for quite a while and I would be very grateful if anyone could help me out with it?

Now that I finally subscribed to digital cable, I watched some of MTV Trés.

I watched a show entitled Indie 101, hosted by Chino. While the show is only a half-hour long, contains many segments excluding videos, and plays mainstream acts, the show is still intended for alternative rock.

This just pisses me off.

Fucking MTV could have retained a host, could have switched Subterranean to a digital subscriber channel, or could have produced it only for the internet, but MTV cancelled the host and instituted a blog for the show, as though that satisfied the need for human interaction on the show.

Apparently, the demographics of MTV Trés warrant a hosted show, but regular MTV2 does not, despite the fact that Indie 101 is primarily in English.

Get with it, MTV. Reinstate the show, with a host, even if it only airs online. Remember, too, that irrelevancy is only a generation of viewers away.

I saw Subterranean on Overdrive this Monday. Good to see Shearer again, especially with such a powerhouse group like Interpol (even if it was only Paul and Carlos). Did the interview segments actually air on TV, too? Hopefully things will start to turn around. I never did see the old "120 Minutes", because I was too young, but from watching old videos and all the hype surrounding the legendary show, I imagine it was something really special. Would love to see it return, or at least a similar concept.

Has Jim returned?

I've noticed a new short, animated promotion for Subterranean airing on MTV2 that includes Jim.

If Jim Shearer returns, or if the show features a new host, then I will watch it regularly again.

(I still list "Subterranean" as the first show on my profile, on Facebook, though I haven't watched the show much since Jim left. Prove me wrong.)

does anyone know the name of the group and the song that plays between the comercials and the actual show when it is all trippy and says 120 minutes?

That VH1 Classic show is crap. I have tivo'ing that show for over a year now, and they play all the same videos over and over. Without fault, you will always see the following videos every show:
Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
Echo Bunnyman - Lips Like Sugar
U2 - Streets have no name

I want the good stuff like the lemonheads, or dinosaur jr.

If anyone out there reading this, has any old episodes of 120 mins from the mid 90's contact me at
jessythecure@yahoo.com

as i collect them, and have around 25 complete shows on dvd from the mtv 120mins series from the mid 90's

thanks

The 120 minutes playlist on this site is fantastic! When I was in high school/college in the late 80s I set my vcr to record the Sunday night episodes of 120 minutes. I literally remember the shows listed from 1989 -- like the one with the "X-Ray on Killing Joke" and that gem of a moment in time when MTV played a Beatnigs video. Alas, many moves and lots of parties later, all those vcr tapes have gone missing. Anyway, whoever put these lists together, God bless you for a stroll down memory lane. Also, just remembered all those "shorts" before/after commercials. The one with the guy with the mud-face-mask and he yawns and stretches his face and it all kind of cracks and chips off in the process. Made my skin crawl. So awesome. Wow, I miss MTV the way it was.
